Melt Banana are one of Japan’s most exciting bands coming out of the underground music scene, making a name for their unique and almost completely uncategorised sonic assaults. They are one of those hardcore bands that don’t really fit into what many call the hardcore scene because they show more invention in 30 seconds then any typical hardcore band would display in their entire career. They are a band that can boast The Likes of The Melvins, John Zworn and Mike Pattern as fans even the late great John Peele was not adverse to a bit of Melt Banana’s consistently unpredictable yet brilliant outputs.
Candy Gun is the first track taken from the bands latest album Fetch, what can I say it delivers straight from the jugular. right from the outset there is the burning walls of guitars that swamp these ears, heavy driving bass lines fast power blasting hardcore beats and the vocals that sound like a Powder Puff Girl hyperventilating, offering a weird softness before really hammering home some big blows.
But Just when you think you know where the song is going Melt Banana openly throw spanners in the works with an complete disregard for boundaries of music genres, with absolute mind melting guitars that play around with high end frequencies, being put through multi layered distortions hurtling the ears through a sonic maze. Just when you think its finished it bites back with blast beats like sharks teeth all big and powerful, and the throbbing bass.
Leaving no doubt that in this listeners mind that Melt Banana have to go down as one of music’s true inventors and absolutely mind blowing live shows.
