One of the many great things about the internet is stumbling across songs a sublime as Dropla by Youth Lagoon, who is the rather reclusive recording project from a guy called Trevor Powers.
Right from the very first opening moments it hits with huge plush swaths not to dissimilar to David Bowie’s Ashes to Ashes with a kind of swish needle drop sounding synth before giving way into Flaming Lips style lofi, with Trevor Powers voice sounding quite likes Grandaddy’s Jason Lyttle.
This record is big, not so much in the popularity stakes, but in the way that Powers just stacks up the walls of melodies. Theres big back beat drums, synths, echoed guitars and what sounds like plucked strings, it ultimately feels like a song written for lost lovers drawing on The Flaming Lips as it falls upon Do You Realise with the crying of you’ll never die.
For me this has got to be up there with one of the more beautiful songs to have come out in 2013 with an album coming out in early March
