Last n night I went to see one of the best gigs I have ever been to in my entire life curtousy of the one and only Baltimore electro mentalist Dan Deacon. how can I possibly describe the live aspect of Mr Deacon? well its like going to the worlds most positive rave, in every sense it feels like one long celebration of unity, coming from Mr Deacon and shared in amongst avid crowds.
There is a colourful play full edge to everything he does, ranging from the stage setup which includes a flashing skull and home-made lighting system wired up to a table stuffed full of home-made electronics whilst being helped by twin drummers and a synth player to bring his chaos to life with extra beats. If you have ever seen Dan Deacon live then you will know that there are always 2 rules to his shows, No chucking of fluids and no chickening out as he leads the entire crowd through party games, like and electro version of Les Savy Fav or possibly even Monotonix.
Usually for an artist to capture the mental energy of their live act on record, for Dan Deacon this is something that is no problem, because he is unwieldy with squalls of electronics and effects laden vocals that build up to to frantic mesh’s of intense fun being led by someone who looks like a science teacher. for sheer inventiveness you could file next to the likes of Holy Fuck and Caribou for someone who really pushes the whole progressive experience of electronic music.
In the words of Dan Deacon this is the point where you wake up, aged 11, covered in blood in the middle of the Nervada Desert realising how cool the Operatic part of Bohemian Rhapsody is.
