Here is a taster from Arbouretums new album Coming Out Of The Fog. Arbouretum are generally one of the most consistently ace rock bands from Baltimore, their last album The Gathering hasn’t left my ipod for at least 3 or 4 months, since I only discovered Arbouretum last year. Everything you need to really know about this band stylistically is delivered in this 5 min blast of what could be described as heady countrified psychedelic doom rock.
They come blasting out of the speakers like a heavier, more interesting version of Midlake. So I put it down as this equation Midlake + Balls + Interesting folk tales = Abouretum. I mean there are so many layers to Arbouretums sound, Big riffing guitars, stodgy keyboards, repetitive rhythms and Dave Hueman’s classic folk laced vocals.
They create the kind of perfect soundtrack for a log cabin style film, the last time they were in Bristol I ended up introducing them onstage by saying “If someone decided to turn Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, then Arbouretum would provide the perfect soundtrack or that if you imagined having sex with Jesus on acid, you might get this” which I think is a fair point.
Coming Out Of The Fog is released on Thrill Jockey records next Monday Jan 21st
They are playing a couple of dates in the UK Brighton Prince Albert Feb 20th and London Corsica Studios Feb 21st! Go and see them.
