so last night un be known to me the biggest popstar super mystic mogul announced his return with a new single and album, ending his ten-year long retirement. A retirement which was brought about by a very strong heart attack from over working. its amazing how he’s managed for so many years to remain a completely ambiguous personality, whilst other rock stars have been lauding it up with constant press appearances and flash on shoots Bowie has remained inconspicuous out of the limelight. I guess he didn’t want the press to see him as an old man as he still effectively clings onto his image.
So it was a bit of a surprise to find out that he had released a new single called Where Are We Now? last night on iTunes with a new album due out later in the year. In my opinion this songs has a lot of the hallmarks of latter-day Bowie, looking at the sad reflection of growing old and the whole fading Peter Pan style dream. It has all the grand feeling that has typified Bowie’s right through his career, there are the typical elements which such as the winding guitars gentle piano and strings back his highly distinctive voice.
On the whole I think this shows a more reflective side to Bowie, after having had time out to think about life. something that I could imagine being quite hard for someone who has been labeled the Peter Pan of music. Someone whose classic heyday still dominates dance floors all over the world. There is a feeling of loss within his voice and the frustration of old age especially considering hes has had more career revivals and music changes then a chameleon has changed its skin!
so the release of new material in time to celebrate the singers 66th Birthday, not bad for an old fart eh!
