One of the most beautiful opening tracks too any album I have heard in 2012 comes in the shape of Danish band Sleep Party People’s – A God Dark Heart, which is taken from their debut album We Were Drifting On A sad Song, which was one of my favourite albums to come out in 2012, one which not many people know about.
straight from the off this track sets the tone for the whole album, with gentle piano and effects laden vocals very much dominate the opening part of the song. There are more than passing nods towards Sigur Ros within the way that the bands main brain Brian Batz has arranged the track melodies colliding with big crashing drums, which make me think of Mercury Rev The Dark is Rising.
It gives the feel of something beautiful and almost nightmarish at the same time rounding up elements of Scandinavian dream scapes ala Sigur Ros, Mum, Efterklang and Mew and throwing them in a huge pot with a Donnie Darko style theme of light Dark. People who have seen this act live will get the reference to Donnie Darko because their onstage image is of 4 men wearing black clothes and White Rabbit Masks. apparently this is because mr Batz thought that the voices sounded like Rabbits singing although I don’t think you could imagine the rabbits in Watership Down singing like this.
I personally think that A God Dark Heart is a near a perfect opening track for an album like We Were Drifting on A Sad Song as you are likely to find. Its beautiful and freaky so you can check it out the album here.
