One of the highlights from this past week has come in the form of Chris Cohen, who played Start The Bus on Thursday night. I was doing one of my manage a deux nights, going to two shows in 1 night, with me arriving just as Mr Cohen and Co were setting up.
From the off his soft lilting psychedelia played upon beautiful fuzzy colours, it was like as if he took the playful element of the likes of Gruff Rhys from Super Furry animals, chucked in some of Connan Mockasins left feel approach and the over all feel of a kings of convenience records.
With Monad you could be forgiven that it has come from a completely different decade as it has a lost feel of a lost psychedelic pop odyssey, with the kind of production values that the fab 4 would have been playing around with in their pot haven strawberry fields. it kicks off with what i think of as a nod to Ravi Shankar with sitar sounding guitars.
What Chris Cohen does is that he plays psychedelia with thought more than volume, building up melodies into colourful dreams and pastoral visions. he is one of a few people who sings and plays drums.
