I just had my brain blown to pieces by and up and coming 2 piece from the Brooklyn ? Hudson area of New York who go by the name of Buke And Gase, that I saw playing with my good friends This Is The Kit up at the Polish Club .
There is something truly original here, maybe its the fact that both the instruments that the bands members Arone Dyer and Aron Sanchez play are completely hand-built to their own custom design. Taking their name from the instruments they play, The Buke being a hybrid of baritone ukulele and the Gase being a guitar bass hybrid.Revel in Concept
I mean there is really nothing I can really compare them too because they are a band that have so far successfully created their own exciting noise that somehow manages to straddle the lines between Folk and Math rock. It was clear for all to see that there are very fine lines in the duos dynamics.
Watching them was like as if you were taken on a very exciting thrill ride because you did not know what was going to happen next. would they drop into floating Ukulele breakdown or thrash out polyrhythmic riffs. It was almost like a musical cross breed of tUnE-yArDs and Marnie Stern as their perpectual interplaying between each other around Arone’s voice is just jaw dropping.
The songs are all underpinned by a simple bass drum beat which offlays all melodic patterns giving them a kind of medieval tribal feel. No matter what they were doing I could feel myself being sucked into the drama of their musical adventuring causing everyone in the Polish club to breave a collective Oh My Fuck!
Buke And Gase are ones to watch out for, and if you are going to the National ATP this weekend be sure to catch them, oh boy indeed.
