Every so often you will come across a singer songwriter in the local scene that will just jump out of you with something pretty special. Earlier in the year we had Crybaby who produced one of the most consistent albums of the year, I think the star next year will fall firmly on the head of one Oliver Wilde.
He is one of the most humble of human giants who provides such a searing heart wrenching melodic lofi attack. the bare elements with in his writing and production style nods towards the likes of Sparklehorse, Elliott Smith and Vic Chestnutt. He lives and breathes every element in his songs, you can tell this in the fact that he composed everything on his demos. He even created the beats by sampling recordings of a drum kit that he had to sell in order to pay the rent on the place he was staying.
There is something about him and his lofi that just feel really genuine, he’s not doing lofi in the sence of covering up for lack of songs by putting on squalling guitars and trying to look cool or indeed edgy. This guy has all the raw and emotional traits that will make him stand out from the crowd of indie hipsters trying desperately to cling onto the whole 90s revival sounds.
There is almost an air of the early Bright Eyes material in the way that he breaches subjects like confidence, depression, loneliness and the whole romanticism of life. its is all of these factors mixed together that has made him the talk of Bristol as he has only done 2 shows with his band.
As a person I feel lucky to know Oliver and to have him amongst one of the many friends I can personally call upon and so seeing him on the stage makes me swell with pride and I can’t wait for his album to come out in the new year. you can check out his recordings on soundcloud link.
