Ok I saw New York’s White Hills play at the Croft a week or so ago, how can I really sum this band up other than saying it was like the sonic equivalent of being on Acid, or like Hawkwind tackling Funkadelics Magot Brain. It was like being taken on a flash back to the whole 1969-70 styled Psych rock.
From the off they rollered out monstrous riffs that wouldn’t have sounded too out-of-place in the UFO club. Bring about mind melting chords with prolonged walls of sonic drenching, giving all an obligatory spazzing feeling. The rhythms were held rock tight and often stripped back to the simplest 4/4 quarter note feel adding in extra kick to all the fuzz going on.
It was like as if they were on a driving mission to send people on a time warp back to the late 60’s early 70’s. Because not only did the sound they creat hark back from that period but they also looked like they had just stepped out of time warp, literally. All of their clothes had a flair feel to them along with glittery eye-liner which gave them a slightly bowie esque twinge to them. I don’t know if any of this makes any sense.
The whole retro feeling made me feel like someone had shoved a hand full of acid tabs into my mouth as my eyes started to see all sorts of warped things. I was like as if I was staring through a 3rd eye, with swirling balls of fire, huge explosions, weird eyes that lead to me doing my painting styled dance moves. I could feel myself getting lost right from the off as every song seemed to drive from huge chugging riffs breaking into winding drones.
Their songs seemed to be out Sex Robots from Space, and about time travel through the use of LSD. The masses of effects at times were building a swirling tunnel mixed in with Jazz subtleties, with which they bring forth a Can Styled Krautrock grove meshed in with the kind of insane lyrics that Giibby Haines may have contributed to the Butthole Surfers.
So Basically they are a huge bulk of psych rock noise that will smatter you in the face!
