Ok so some of you oput there may or may not have come across bristols wrong tronica music scene, i call it wrong tronica because its completely mental electro and i mean it not in a skins kind of party way.
well one of the scenes componants is KID CARPET
Started as a Stoner Joke with him messing around with a few kids toys , creating electronica with a humorous and tragicly comic edge. It is something very Bristol in his approach to things.
The first time i heard him was on Radio 1 on Mary Anne hobbs Breezblock show where she played his electro version of Jump, by cobbling together my little Tomy Guitars, a cheesy kids drum and bass beat and Samples of Legendary poetic nutcase Ivor Cuttler.
Here is a video of him performing Jump at Bestival 2007, I was there as his onstage dancer.
The first ever time I saw him play was at Ashton Court Festival in 2003, I instantly fell in love with what he was doing. He had something very unique and entertaining. but his use of Kids Toys kind of meant that he was stuck with the tagg of being a bit of a novelty act. but for me he is too good a songwriter to really be a novelty act, in my opinion.
I actually owe a lot of my success in becoming a cult personality to him, I mean the very first gig I ever put on was a show with him in the Croft, this was about 6 months after the first time I saw him. I was so excited about the musical prospects of what he was doing at the time. It was like as if he mixed it all in with a bit of a punk rock attitude and energy.
I became very good friends with him, he even put me up in his house, after I was homeless after one of his many shows at the Croft. He would later on have me as an on stage dancer and as a regular contributor to a monthly radio show he presented on comunity radio station.
I hadnt realised that i had actually met him a couple of years beforehand, he used to be in a band called Actual Size, who were one of Bristols many nearly ran bands, who were signed by Polydor and dropped after their first single, they were dropped after the release of the first single. they were kind of like a Radiohead type band.
He has then truly unique ability to appeal to both adults and kids a like, infact he pretty much apeals ro everybody. Its like as if there was a perfect mix that is pretty comical and tragic at the very same time which has made him very endearing.
He has just completed a family show Kid Carpet and the Noisey Animals which had a sold out run in the Brewery Theatre.
