So one of the bands I am patiently awaiting the release of their debut album, is a band by the name of Factory Floor.
I came across these guys supporting the Horrors at the Thekla back in 2009. when the horrors were touring the Primary Colours album. They really whiped my breath away, by concocting a sound so throbbingly intense that i could feel my guts getting pickled by dark drones.
in many ways they were a perfect support act for the Horrors at the time. I personally felt that they stole the Horrors thunder at that show, everything about them was just so exciting for me. they are the kind of band for me that represent the more exciting edge of dance music. indulging themselves into the early house soul of Krautrock
Its a bit hard to put into words how I feel, when i have seen this band play. They have the cold clinical feeling of Kraftwerk as some of the rhythms feel like they are banging bits of steel together. The vocals also seem a bit robotic, creating an almost un-emotional atmosphere.
As well as there being lots atmospheric drones, there are white noise melodies bounced around on various distortion units. There are lots of sonic references to the likes of Silver Apples, Faust, Neu! Merzbow and Portishead. You can feel it in the way that they build things up layering up levels of of sonic depth. building for the scary scattered drop.
They are the kind of band that dont really care for 3 min long pop songs, they are a kind of bansd who are prepaired to push the boat out, taking listneiners on what feel likes a factory tour.
The guitars when they are played arent so much used for riffs in the usual way guitars are used. In fact they are thwacked using violin bows to shred ears to pieces. whilst being toppled by huge banks of synthesisers that hold down lengthy percussive notes, and grooving syncopated rhythms being harnessed by a repetitive feel.
Its when factory Floor play live that they really show their wings, by splicing things up with what I can only describe as a My Bloody Valentine styled amplifitude, ie sound played at a complete brain frazzling volume.
Every time I have seen them, and it must be about 9 times now, I have felt their noise not just felt the sound coming off the stage travel through me but lift me up. their sonic forces rattle my jeans. they have always left me hanging hankering for more, even if they have played hour long sets. But that is the genuine brilliantness about them and the addictivness of what they create is great and pretty damn vast.
They are un afraid to really push the sonic barriers, almost reaching the brown notes. if you dont know what the brown notes are, then they are a set of notes in the frequency that can have less desired effects on you. basically they can make you shit yourself or throw up.
They are perfect for a dingy dark room styled atmosphere, The sort of place where it is perfect to get lost in their sonic maze. Leaving people like myself feeling like they could really go on all night without getting tired.
I am kind of surprised that it has taken them this long to get round to making a debut album, but it should be hitting the shelves somewhere in the new year.
