After going to see Gross Magic, it did spurn to my attention that the current set of indie crops, seem to be retreating the sound of early American 90s grunge flavoured music. so taking in cross references from the likes of Dinosaur Jr, Pavement, Ride, Sonic Youth and Grandaddy. all of them were bands who defined an era of slacker rock, made by nerdy dweebs, creating reverb soaked guitar rackets.
So I thought I would do a bit of a round up of bands I have come across in the past year that have pretty much nailed the whole sound in the reproduction factory.
Yuck
Yuck, if you don’t know them were formed out the ashes of teen indie nearly come likelies Cajun Dance Party. They perfectly refflect the whole atmosphere that bands like Dinosaur jr would conjour up, with high winding guitars riffs, solid back beats that creats a jumpy energy. This is something that deffinitely underpinned the whole sound of the 90s.
Yuck are probably the biggest band on the London scene, who have been hammering the whole shoegaze post grunge sound that dominated the airwaves. Their fuzzed out vocals creat the ultimate looser sound.
each one of their songs has a pop bomb blast feel to it which makes it breeze past these ears, this kind of music makes me jump around a lot, its perfects couplet for then 90s single generation.
Gross Magic
Gross Magic hail from the greater London Brighton fast link area, they kind provoke an image for me that kind of sounds a bit like Blind Mellon being drowned out with traces of early 90s Flaming Lips, with the way they play around with psychedelic effects. High winding voices daze out with guitars.
when I saw these guys the other week they actually reminded me of a band called 4 or 5 magicians, who also used to be from Brighton as I seem to remember, and there is more then a passing similarities. maybe they could have been this band in previous life.
They are kind off band that will stick firmly to their guns in producing renegade guitar pop music. Drowining bass played over with bright burning flowery guitars, carving a the racket which J Mascis has been riffling off for over the past 25 years, carrying a constant enrgy all the way through songs
If I was to describe the sound up in one word, I guess I would say it is kind of stodgy. you know its the kind of music that caters for people who may not like hard driven music and feel disillusioned with society!
Fanzine
I became a massive fan of Fanzine, when I first saw them supporting . I thought that they stole Yucks thunder in the way that they had no answer to them. with each one of their songs sounding like they had just come from the same gene pool as the Lemmonheads, or a fuzzed out Grandaddy.
There is something beautifully simple, they never hark around with too many complex things. I don’t know if i am making much sense to anyone out there!. I can imagine its just the sort of thing you could imagine Evan Dando, slipping his headphones onto this singing his aloof style voice out aloud with these guys.
There is almost an element of early Weezer, in their ability to nail pop laden harmonies onto short guitar bursts. This band coming at it from the UK, are probably the band who have come the closest to what I would say nailing the sound with near perfect ooh ooohs and ahhhs the kind of thing that hadnt really been nailed in my mind since bands like Ash back in the 90s.
Ringo Deathstarr
Ringo Deathstarr , hail from Texas. they creat a kind of loud drowning feel that May Bloody Valentine had been renoned for producing. I mean these guys absolutely nailt it like as if they were nailing lfags to a mast. boy they are loud, their sound is one that i could describe as being amp juicing.
They are probably one of the best bands to have ever played start the Bus in Bristol, every aspect of them is drilled with a ribb pounding effect, deliverd like a bullet, or a heavily stripped down My Bloody Valentine, because to see those guys in that kind of a confined space would be too much of an ear aching head fuck.
their chiming guitars and splattering drums have a kind of dance floor feel to, with simple repeated grooves. Sometimes their sound could be characterised for their droning vocals that sound almost swampy, with a lofi hush in amongst pools of noise. at points adding on Jesus and Marychain styled big juicy wall of noise .
