I
Right so I saw these girls the other night opening up for Wire, they were a pretty perfect support act for the gig. I dont know if many of you guys out there have come across this 2 piece from Brooklyn.
whilst I was watching them my jaw did drop a bit, My friend who was putting on the show described them as being two girls that make a lot of noise, in my head that pretty much equivilates to a win win situation of really liking a band.
there is more then a bit of an obvious reference to The Slits in their sound, mind you its very dificult to compare any female fronted post punk bands to the likes of The Slits, no thats its a bad thing in my opinion, its just no female band has really come along since that has really changed the musical landscape.
I had stumbled across Talk Normal before somewhere, although I really want sure where from. you see sometimes my memory for some things just disintegrates like the sands of time.
They were pretty astonishing to watch as they battered my ears. its pretty spikey post punk and almost krautrock fuzzy drones. there is also for me an element of talking heads styled experiments with in the drum beats and repetative natures creat something that is really menacing. Sometimes wacthing them live was a bit like having my head smashed open by dustbin lids. it was like as if they were trying to push every sonic barrier they had in their power.
some of the vocals had a bit of what I call a sweet and sweet and sour mix, you know one moment they would be pretty high pitched and melodic and then they were pretty screechy. just brilliant
they also in ways remind me of a couple of bands that have been floating around the bristol scene for a little while. I feel people that really like these guys might well apreciate.
Big Joan
Big Joan have been floating around the Bristol scene for about 13 years, creating a sound that is irrespressible in its fierce bass driven sound along sweet vocals, crackled beats and ear piercingly nailed guitars.
They have just released a new album The Long, Slow Death of Big Joan.
Hysterical Injury
Bath Based Bass and drums duo, who have a pencahnt for creating very expressive but yet hummable rackets. mixing sweet sounding vocals and ernest opinions together creating something that at times can be as intimidating as it can be beautiful to listen too. they constantly fill me with energy when ever I have seen them live.
Wouldnt it be amazing if you had Talk Normal, Big Joan and Hysterical Injury playing together that would be one holy fucking moley of a show
